Spelling Test: Anacapri Or Ana Capri?

As I strolled along the sun-drenched streets of this picturesque Italian commune, I couldn’t help but ponder over a seemingly trivial yet intriguing question: Is it Anacapri or Ana Capri? Both spellings are often used interchangeably to describe this serene gem perched high above its more famous sister town on the island of Capri.

Anacapri’s name originates from the ancient Greek prefix “ana-“, which means “up” or “above.” This notion aptly reflects the town’s geographical location—a plateau gently nestled amidst vivid landscapes and overlooking mesmerizing views of vibrant blue waters.

So, if you’re wondering which spelling variant to use, Anacapri would be historically accurate and therefore more appropriate.

Anacapri vs. Capri town

Deciding between Anacapri and Capri can be a tough choice, especially when you’re pressed for time or want to experience the best of the island.

Anacapri, situated higher up on the island at around 150 meters elevation, provides a more tranquil setting. As I strolled through its narrow streets lined with charming shops and restaurants, I couldn’t help but appreciate the slower pace compared to Capri town.

The quieter atmosphere in Anacapri is perfect for those seeking solace from bustling crowds while still enjoying picturesque views and delectable Italian cuisine. On the other hand, Capri town is known for being livelier and more vibrant – ideal if you’re looking to socialize or immerse yourself in an energetic ambiance. Both offer shopping, but Capri town center wins for the fashion shopper. Anacapri wins for the authentic experience.

Consider your personal tastes before settling on either Anacapria or Capri as each destination offers something unique catering to different traveller’s needs.

Top Sights To See In Anacapri

Villa San Michele is a must-visit as it provides panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.

Villa San Michele

I can’t help but appreciate the rich history and breathtaking views at Villa San Michele in Anacapri, Italy. Once home to famous Swedish physician, Axel Munthe, this enchanting villa is filled with ancient artifacts he collected from not just Capri and Anacapri, but also various other fascinating locations.

One of the highlights of Villa San Michele lies within its award-winning garden – recently named as Italy’s most beautiful private park. Strolling through this lush haven feels like you’re floating on Cloud Nine, especially with the panoramic view from atop a ledge 327 meters above sea level! For an affordable 8 Euros (about $9 USD), you can explore this remarkable place daily between 9 am and 3:30 pm.

If you don’t have time to read Munthe’s captivating book about his life as a Sweedish doctor to royalty, and the building the villa, The Story of San Michele, then at a minimum check out the villa’s Wikipedia page.

Chiesa di San Michele

While exploring Anacapri, you absolutely cannot miss the stunning Chiesa di San Michele. This beautiful church, built in 1719, is located on Piazza San Nicola and serves as one of the principal sights of Anacapri.

One look at this meticulously crafted mural, and you can’t help but feel transported to another time when beauty was cherished deeply with every detail. There’s something truly enchanting about standing amidst centuries-old art while surrounded by breathtaking architecture.

The tranquil setting offers a stark contrast to bustling tourist hotspots elsewhere on Capri island – making it all the more serene for visitors seeking respite from their busy itineraries.

Fortini Coastal Walk

One of the most exciting things to do in Anacapri is undoubtedly the Fortini Coastal Walk. It’s a highly scenic walk along the west coast of Anacapri, stretching from the Blue Grotto to Faro (the lighthouse).

The walk passes by several old blockhouses or “fortini,” which were once used as defense posts during medieval times. The Sentiero dei Fortini, as it is locally known, offers stunning views of the azure coastline and is an excellent way for visitors on a day trip to experience some beautiful countryside scenery while enjoying some physical activity.

Seggiovia Monte Solaro

I love taking the Seggiovia Monte Solaro when visiting Anacapri. This single-seater chairlift has been transporting tourists to the top of Monte Solaro for almost seventy years and offers a stunning 360-degree panorama of Capri during its thirteen-minute ascent.

When I reached the summit, I was amazed by how beautiful everything looked. The sea seemed so close, yet so far away from this vantage point. It’s not only about seeing things but experiencing them as well. The snack bar at the top of the climb is a welcome oasis for refreshment.

Scala Fenicia (Phoenician Steps)

One of the top sights to see in Anacapri, Italy is Scala Fenicia, also known as the Phoenician Steps. These 921 steps were originally built to connect Anacapri with Marina Grande before a road was constructed in the late nineteenth century.

As a traveler looking for unique experiences, walking up these historic steps offers an incredible opportunity to not only experience some of Italy’s rich history but also enjoy breathtaking scenery.

Be prepared for a workout session though since the climb can be quite challenging and requires proper footwear.

Activities To Do In Anacapri

Visitors can take a chairlift up to Mount Solaro for breathtaking views, swim in the crystal clear waters near Anacapri, explore the iconic Blue Grotto, and visit Parco Filosofico dell’Isola di Capri.

Mount Solaro: High Drama

The highlight of my visit to Anacapri was the breathtaking Mount Solaro. As the highest point and viewing point in Capri, Italy, it offers unrivaled panoramic views that are beyond compare.

The summit can be easily reached via a chairlift ride that provides high drama and stunning vistas.

I felt a sense of exhilaration as I ascended towards the sky on the chairlift ride to reach Mount Solaro’s peak. Upon arriving at the top, I could see all around me – lush green hillsides, bright blue water stretching into infinity, and beautiful rocky terrain below- everything looked surreal! It was refreshing to escape from crowded tourist spots and find tranquility amidst nature’s best offerings throughout Anacapri.

Swimming Near Anacapri

One of the most enjoyable activities to do in Anacapri, Italy is swimming. Although Anacapri boasts no sandy beaches, it has rocky coves and spots where one can jump from rocks into deep water.

Gradola and Punta Carena are two popular locations for taking a dip. Note that Gradola is not for wading up to your ankles at a sandy beach. It is rocky, and you enter the water by climbing down a ladder. Punta Carena is especially renowned for its imposing lighthouse that’s one of the largest in Italy. The lighthouse sits on a rocky headland overlooking crystal-clear waters that invite you to dive right in.

Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto is a must-visit attraction when in Anacapri, Italy. This stunning sea cave boasts crystal clear blue waters that reflect on its interior walls, creating an otherworldly and magical experience.

The grotto was used as a marine temple during the Roman times and today attracts both locals and tourists alike. While it can be an expensive excursion, taking a boat trip from Marina Grande or hopping on a bus from Anacapri to visit the Blue Grotto is worth every penny.

Parco Filosofico Dell’Isola Di Capri

As someone who loves to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, I highly recommend visiting Parco Filosofico dell’Isola di Capri in Anacapri. This hidden gem on cliffs over on the island of Capri offers a unique formation with beautiful views that cannot be found anywhere else. On several occasions in the past, I had the opportunity of meeting Gunner Adler Karlsson and his wife, the creators and donors of the park. They epitomized the magic of Anacapri, having done so much in their lives.

As you take a boat tour around the island, you will come across this attraction and immediately be struck by its beauty.

The park is filled with sculptures and artwork created by contemporary artists inspired by philosophy and mythology. Each sculpture tells its own story and adds to the peaceful atmosphere of the park. After visiting the park, be sure to grab lunch or dinner at Da Gelsomina. Of course the views are a amazing, but be sure to set aside a few hours in the afternoon at their pool. They would love to have you. This will be one of the highlights of your trip.  (Pro tip:  Call Da Gelsomina and have them pick you up from the center of Anacapri.)

It’s an ideal place to unwind and escape from the hustle and bustle of typical vacation experiences.

Anacapri: A Quiet Countryside Day Trip Experience

Escape the hustle and bustle of crowded tourist areas, and enjoy a day trip to Anacapri for a serene countryside experience you won’t forget.

Escape The Crowds

Anacapri is a great destination for those looking to escape the crowds. Compared to nearby Capri, Anacapri offers a quieter and more peaceful atmosphere. During peak tourist season in July and August, Capri can become quite overwhelming with crowds and heat.

In contrast, Anacapri offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of larger cities like Naples or Rome.

While there are certainly plenty of things to do in Anacapri, it’s possible to spend an entire day simply enjoying the laid-back vibes and picturesque scenery surrounding you, but staying longer is certainly the best way to go.

Take time to unwind at one of the town’s charming cafes or stroll through hidden alleyways that offer glimpses into daily life on this beautiful island.

Embrace The Tranquility

One of the best things about Anacapri is its tranquil countryside vibe. As a millennial who’s always on-the-go, embracing this peaceful atmosphere can be a refreshing change of pace.

During my visit to Anacapri, I took time to stroll through the town center’s charming streets and admire the stunning view of Bay of Naples from afar.

There are plenty more ways to embrace tranquility in Anacapri – take a walk on Fortini Coastal Walk or Scala Fenicia (Phoenician Steps) for breathtaking views that will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

Unwind even further with a chairlift ride up Mount Solaro where you can bask in beautiful views while surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant flowers all around you.

Enjoy The Local Culture And Cuisine

Anacapri may be a small town, but it is home to some of the most delicious food on Capri Island. The locals take great pride in their traditional dishes made with high-quality, local ingredients.

One dish that stands out is ravioli capresi, which are homemade pasta filled with caciotta cheese and served with tomato sauce and fresh basil.  A very casual place that we enjoy is Sciue’ Sciue’, sorry they do not have a web site.

In addition to tasting the delicious cuisine of Anacapri, you can also immerse yourself in the local culture by attending events like the Festa di San Michele Arcangelo in September or visiting artisan workshops where handmade ceramics and textiles are crafted right before your eyes.

Relax And Unwind

One of the best things about visiting Anacapri is the opportunity to completely relax and unwind. Unlike other popular destinations, this small town offers a more laid-back atmosphere, allowing visitors to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

But that’s not all – there are plenty of opportunities for relaxation in nature as well. From swimming along the stunning coastline to taking a peaceful walk through Parco Filosofico dell’Isola di Capri, this charming town is perfect for those seeking tranquility.

And with fewer crowds than nearby Capri, there’s no need to worry about battling crowds or feeling overwhelmed during your stay in Anacapri.

Why Anacapri Is A Must-Visit Destination

In conclusion, a day trip to Anacapri is a must-visit for millennial travelers seeking tranquil and authentic Italian experiences. Compared to the bustling Capri, Anacapri offers breathtaking views over the Bay of Naples and iconic landmarks such as Villa San Michele and Seggiovia Monte Solaro.

Visitors can also enjoy swimming near Anacapri or explore the Blue Grotto for an unforgettable adventure. Overall, Anacapri is perfect for escaping crowds, indulging in local culture and cuisine, relaxing and unwinding.
