My trip to Italy was filled with moments of beauty and reflection.
One that stands out in particular was when my family and I sat down for lunch at the Villa delle Palme restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. We were surrounded by other tables also enjoying their meal, but what stood out to me most was how different each table’s atmosphere was. While some were filled with laughter and conversation, ours was strangely silent. Everyone around the table seemed content to disconnect from the world around them and enjoy being in each other’s presence without any need for screens or outside entertainment.

This experience encouraged us to further explore Italy’s undiscovered beauty. We ventured away from the hustle and bustle of the more popular tourist destinations in search of hidden gems. It was remarkable to see how much there was to explore, with small towns tucked away in mountain valleys or tucked along the coastline that had never been seen by most tourists. Being able to avoid the crowds gave us a unique opportunity to experience all that Italy had to offer.

As we explored more of the country, I was able to recognize the benefits of taking a break from screens while on vacation. Away from all distractions, I was able to connect with my surroundings and truly appreciate what was around me. Between hikes in rolling hills and scenic views, outdoor activities, and exploring local culture, there were plenty of opportunities to take in all that nature had to offer. I was also able to take the time for self-reflection and enjoy a much needed stress reduction.
Our travels around Italy took us through many places, each offering its own local culture and charm. From authentic dining experiences to cultural festivals, there were plenty of ways to explore and embrace local culture. We even found ourselves interacting with locals, something that I may have missed out on if I was glued to my phone or laptop.

Throughout our journey we stayed at various accommodations – from rustic farmhouses and villas to remote bed & breakfasts and peaceful retreats – but the one common thread between them all was that none had any form of high-speed internet, severely limiting our access to screens. While it certainly took some getting used to, I increasingly found myself appreciating the unplugged atmosphere that each place offered and the unique opportunity to slow down and disconnect from everyday life.

My trip to Italy taught me the importance of taking a break from screens and connecting with the world around us. I would encourage anyone looking for an off-the-beaten-path Italian adventure to explore this beautiful country while embracing all that it has to offer. Whether it’s discovering hidden gems, enjoying local culture or simply relaxing in peaceful retreats, there is plenty of undiscovered Italy waiting to be explored and enjoyed without any need for screens. So unplug, take a deep breath, and enjoy!
P.S. Unplug with the exception of Google Maps.

Makes me want to book a ticket today and leave my phone and laptop at home. Great read!
Great reminder to unplug and enjoy the beauty of the moment…lucky your moments were in Italy.
Yes, a great reminder for every day, but ESPECIALLY while in Italy
