Walk the Walls of Lucca and Rekindle your Wanderlust

When I think back to my travels in Italy, one of my fondest memories is walking the walls of Lucca.

The city’s walls are a beauty to behold, and they served as an inspiration for me to travel more and explore places that were once beyond my reach.

If you’re looking for a unique experience while in Italy, then walking the city wall around Lucca should be at the top of your list! Here’s why:

It’s an Affordable Adventure

The cost of visiting Lucca and walking the wall is relatively inexpensive. Admission tickets can cost only a few euros per person. Plus, you don’t have to worry about booking a tour guide—you’ll find plenty of brochures with maps that will help you navigate your own way around this fascinating city wall.

Rest assured that you won’t get lost, as the wall forms a circle around the heart of the old city.  At a length of just under 3 miles, you won’t be tired after you time on the wall.

You Can Walk or Bike Around the Wall

If you want to take in the sights from atop the city wall, then you can choose to walk around its perimeter. This route typically takes about two hours but it’s worth it! From up there, you can admire the view of red-tiled roofs and cobblestone streets below.

Or if you want a faster mode of transportation, then rent a bike instead. Cyclists can make their way around the entire four-kilometer circumference in just over half an hour.  If you decide to rent a bike, make a reservation in advance.  A company called Ride the Walls even offer e-bikes.

Set aside from time after your walk on the wall for liquid refreshments and snack in Lucca’s round piazza, Piazza Anfiteatro.

It’s Home to Ancient History

As well as being stunningly beautiful and convenient, another great thing about Lucca is its rich history.

The walls date all the way back to medieval times (around 1504). They remained largely intact until 1865 when Napoleon III ordered them demolished for redevelopment purposes. Fortunately, after much protest from locals passionate about preserving their historical structures, these walls were saved and restored instead—and now they still stand tall today!

To best understand the city and its history, hire a guide.  We suggest a two hour walking tour through Get Your Guide.  For more on the history of the walls, see this linked article

Experience Lucca’s Epic Musical Culture

If you’re looking for a destination that combines stunning architecture, rich history, and a thriving music scene, look no further than Lucca. This city is the birthplace of one of the world’s most famous opera composers, Giacomo Puccini, and his legacy lives on in the city’s vibrant musical culture.

The Puccini Museum, located in the composer’s childhood home, is a must-visit for any music lover. Explore the exhibits, which feature personal items and memorabilia from Puccini’s life and work. And if you’re lucky enough to be in Lucca during the summer, don’t miss the Lucca Summer Festival, an epic event that attracts some of the biggest names in music. Think Elton John, Bob Dylan, and David Bowie.

But the music doesn’t stop there. Lucca’s churches and historic buildings also play host to a range of classical music concerts and recitals throughout the year. From intimate recitals to full-blown symphony performances, there’s something for every music lover in this city.

So, whether you’re a die-hard opera fan or just love a good concert, make sure Lucca is on your travel bucket list. It’s a one-of-a-kind destination that will leave you with memories that last a lifetime.

Getting There

If you are staying in Florence, Lucca is a short train ride away.  If you are driving, you might first visit the beach resort town of Via Reggio, and then stop at Lucca on your way back to Florence.

Conclusion:

If you’re ever planning a trip to Italy, I highly recommend visiting Lucca and taking some time out to walk (or bike) its ancient city wall—it was certainly one of my favorite experiences during my travels!

Not only will it give you some much-needed exercise but also provide plenty of photo opportunities along the way—so don’t forget your camera!

For those who seek adventure and nostalgia all in one place, look no further than this timeless Italian landmark!

  1. What a beautiful city. Saw a Alanis Morissette concert there and bought beautiful ceramic tiles for our kitchen. The ceramic tile was well worth the wait for the tile to arrive in the US.
