The Veneto Experience: A Toast to the Region’s Unforgettable Drinks

As someone who loves to travel and indulge in all things food and drink, I recently set my sights on the Veneto region of Italy.  (Venice is in this region.) And let me tell you, my taste buds were in for a treat. I may not be a sommelier or mixologist, but I do know a good drink when I taste one. And the Veneto? Well, it’s a drinker’s paradise.

First on the list is the famous Prosecco. Sparkling, crisp, and oh-so-refreshing, this wine is the perfect choice for a celebration or, you know, a Tuesday afternoon. I mean, who needs a reason to pop open a bottle of bubbles?

And the best part? Prosecco is produced in the hills surrounding Treviso, so you can feel good about supporting local producers.  Liz was a big promoter of Prosecco long before it became trendy.  Now it can be found almost everywhere in America.  Yay, Liz!

But the Veneto isn’t just about sparkling wines. The region is also famous for its rich and full-bodied still wines, including Amarone and Valpolicella. I have to admit, I’m not the most educated wine drinker, but I do know that these wines are packed with flavor and are the perfect choice for a night in with a good book and some cheese.

And then there’s the Bellini cocktail. This classic drink, made with Prosecco and fresh peach puree, was a favorite of none other than Ernest Hemingway himself. And while I may not have Hemingway’s way with words, I do have his appreciation for a good cocktail. Sipping a Bellini at Harry’s Bar in Venice is a must for any traveler to the area. The bar’s rich history and sophisticated atmosphere make it a truly special experience.

But the drink that truly stole my heart during my time in the Veneto was the Aperol Spritz. This light and refreshing cocktail, made with Aperol, Prosecco, and soda water, is the perfect aperitivo (Italian for pre-dinner drink). It’s a staple of Italian life and can be found in bars and cafes throughout the country. It’s the perfect way to start off an evening, especially if you have a long night of pasta and wine ahead of you (not that I’m speaking from experience or anything).

In conclusion, my adventures in the Veneto region of Italy were a crash course in the country’s rich drink culture. From the bubbles of Prosecco to the complex flavors of its famous wines, the Veneto is a drinker’s paradise.

And while I may not be the most educated drinker, I do know a good drink when I taste one. So if you’re looking for a truly unforgettable experience, add the Veneto to your travel itinerary and raise a glass to the beauty of Italian life.
