Don’t try this alone:  Swimming in the Blue Grotto

Many visitors to the island of Capri enjoy shopping in the crowded streets after the short ferry ride from Positano or Sorrento.  The shops include all the high-end fashion brands that one would expect in such a hot destination.  Many day trippers don’t get beyond the town of Capri with its quaint Piazzetta under the colorfully tiled clock tower.  There is much more to discover on the island going off the beaten path.

The hiking is challenging for those will to sweat on the Phoenician Steps from the port (Porto Turistico di Capri) up to the top of Mount Solaro.  There is a chairlift to take you part of the way back down to the village of Anacapri.  While there is so much to see and do on the island, a boat ride around the island should not be missed.  A quick swim at the Green Grotto is well worth the price of a private boat tour.  That is good fun, but my most memorable experience is at the Blue Grotto with my family.  Most people visit this by boat and pay handsomely, as the transfer to a small boat that can navigate the small opening charges an additional fee that can feel like extortion.

On one trip, we hiked down to near the Blue Grotto.  After noting the old rusty ladder from the sea and the signs strictly prohibiting swimming, we contemplated the rough seas and the lack of boats in the ordinarily crowded area.  Exercising incredibly poor judgment, we jumped right into the water and swam into the Blue Grotto.  Obviously, you should absolutely not do that, but I must say that it was WONDERFUL.  The mixture of light and color was like nothing we had ever seen.  Seeing it from a small boat doesn’t remotely compare with the view underwater.  Again, please do not do this… but I am glad we did.
